Cannabis dispensaries face unique social media challenges due to platform restrictions. Successful cannabis marketers focus on educational content, high-quality photography, and community engagement while avoiding direct references to consumption or prices. Creative terminology and altered hashtag spellings help bypass algorithms that trigger shadowbans. Professional management services like Local Social Link™ offer compliant, industry-specific content across multiple platforms for a fraction of in-house costs. The right social strategy transforms these obstacles into opportunities for brand growth.
Platform Bans of Cannabis Content
While state laws increasingly accept legal cannabis, social media platforms maintain rigid restrictions that greatly impact dispensary marketing efforts. Meta platforms like Facebook and Instagram enforce strict bans on cannabis content, treating it as federally illegal despite state-level legality.
These platform restrictions create significant hurdles for legitimate businesses.
Content moderation policies vary widely across platforms. Instagram blocks #marijuana but allows #cannabis, while TikTok heavily restricts all cannabis-related terms.
Shadowbanning—the practice of hiding posts from followers without notification—occurs frequently, leaving dispensaries wondering why their reach suddenly plummets.
The inconsistency is striking when you compare cannabis to alcohol content, which faces far fewer restrictions.
This uneven application of rules forces dispensaries to develop creative workarounds that avoid direct product promotion while still building brand awareness.
Benefits of Social Media for Cannabis Dispensaries

Despite platform challenges, social media remains a powerful tool for cannabis dispensaries seeking growth in this competitive market. When used strategically, these platforms foster brand engagement through interactive content like Q&A sessions, polls, and behind-the-scenes videos and photos.
Social media excels at audience education, allowing dispensaries to share infographics about cannabis benefits, consumption methods, and product differences without direct promotion. This builds credibility while managing compliance issues.
Dispensaries can showcase budtender expertise and highlight company culture, humanizing their brand in an industry often facing stigma.
Community-building opportunities can be found via local event promotion, collaborations with neighboring businesses, and social responsibility initiatives. These connections translate to customer loyalty and word-of-mouth marketing—invaluable assets in regions with advertising restrictions.
Tips to Create Compelling Social Content for Cannabis Dispensaries
Creating compelling social media content for cannabis dispensaries requires strategic planning across several key areas.
Focus on educational content that highlights legal regulations, explains product classifications, and addresses common misconceptions. Visual storytelling is equally important—prioritize high-quality photography showcasing products and behind-the-scenes glimpses of your operation.
When considering engagement strategies, remember that authenticity resonates with cannabis consumers. Share industry trends and strain-specific benefits through various content formats including infographics, short videos, and educational carousels.
Always avoid displaying pricing or consumption scenes in organic posts. Instead, leverage your expertise by explaining THC/CBD ratios and wellness applications, positioning your dispensary as a trusted community resource rather than just a retailer.
Avoid Shadowbans Through Compliance
As we’ve mentioned, maneuvering social media policies is a significant hurdle for cannabis dispensaries.
Platform-specific regulations vary widely, with Meta allowing limited cannabis content while TikTok enforces strict bans on related terminology.
Smart content alternatives include using creative terminology like “cann flicks” instead of “cannabis oil” and avoiding prohibited hashtags that trigger algorithms.
Consider a few of these practical approaches:
- Replace direct terms with altered spellings (#w33d instead of #weed)
- Never show consumption or prices in promotional posts
- Include age-restriction gates and appropriate disclaimers
- Focus on educational content rather than product promotion
- Get LegitScript certified for CBD advertising on Instagram and Facebook

Local Social Link™ offers a complete solution for just $97/month that handles an automated marketing process. This service creates daily, industry-specific content across multiple platforms—Facebook, Google Business, Instagram, LinkedIn, and more.

Local Social Link™ delivers professional content at a fraction of these costs while boosting audience engagement through:
- Eye-catching, compliant visuals, branded with your logo and website URL
- Strategic hashtags and captions
- Consistent posting schedules
- Niche-specific content that drives local traffic
Getting started is a 1-2-3 process:

How do I order?
Simply click any Order button on this page. If you get stuck, reach out to us on the Contact Us page and we’ll get you started.
Can I cancel any time?
Yes, you can cancel any time after your first 3 paid months. Also, if you change your mind in the first 48 hours after placing your order, you can cancel and get a refund. After 48 hours, we will have already begun work on your project, in which case you can cancel after 3 months.
How does billing work?
Once your payments start, you’re billed once a month on the anniversary date of your first payment. All payments are pre-payments for the upcoming month.
Can I get a refund?
You can cancel your order within 48 hours. Just reply to your welcome email with your request. After 48 hours, no refund is available because we will already have begun work on your Local Social Link project. You can however, cancel any time after three months.
Is posting more than once a day too much?
No, it’s not. According to Hubspot and MANY other studies, posting on Facebook at least once a day is necessary. Keep in mind, not everyone is going to see every post. So by posting twice a day, you insure your fans hear from you at least once a day. On other channels such as Google Business Profile and LinkedIn, one post a day is a good frequency.
Equally important as frequency, and perhaps a bit more so, is consistency and quality. Sporadic posting doesn’t do much for your page or your business. Our professional, engaging graphics ensure you are supplying high quality content on a consistent basis.
Is a contract required?
No. You can cancel Local Social Link™ at any time after the first 3 months. We require a 3-month minimum due to the significant work we do on our end to get your campaign created and running on your social media channels.
Also, there will never be any price increase for the service once you begin working with us!
Won’t all my competitors be using these same images?
No, it’s highly unlikely. Here’s why.
For any given population of businesses, only a small percentage will commit to a product. For instance, when selling any kind of product or service, a 1% conversion rate from a cold list is considered great. In other words, if there are 100 similar businesses in your area and we hit every one of them up to the best of our ability, the odds are that we’d only get 1 out of the 100 to become a client.
Speaking from many years of sales experience with thousands of clients, as well as from a statistical viewpoint, it’s practically impossible to saturate any given geographic area.
Also, it doesn’t matter if your competitors use the same images. The fact is, it’s highly unlikely that your clients will be following more than one or two businesses in your niche, especially if they are already your customer. They’ll be following YOU and not your competitors.
However, if you want to put your mind at ease, just ask me on our Contact form if anyone is using LSL in your target area and I’ll let you know. Odds are that you are the first.
Is it safe to share my social media accounts?
Yes, it is safe. We follow all current Facebook and social media channel rules to the letter. They have strict security protocols. And remember, Facebook and social media company pages were designed specifically for teams to work together. You, as the administrator, always control your account and all matters relating to it. We are simply part of your editorial support team.
Can I re-share, re-use or delete the posts once you post them?
Yes. Use and re-use as much as you like. You can also delete any post at any time. And if you don’t want something to re-post, simply ask us to remove it from the list.
Can I still do my own posts in addition to yours?
Yes. You can post anything, any time. The more you engage with your local clients, the better the results.
Can I preview the campaign images before you begin posting?
Yes. You get a chance to preview the images before we begin automatic posting. We’ll remove any images you don’t want to include.
Can you edit the images themselves, the animations (if applicable), or the text on the image?
While it is possible to edit the images themselves, this is not included as part of the basic Local Social Link™ service. If you want further graphic customization, contact us for an estimate based on your needs.
